Polished concrete has moved beyond warehouses and showrooms into contemporary homes, studios, offices and hospitality spaces. Its visual simplicity, hard-wearing surface and ability to use an existing suitable slab make it worth considering—but suitability and finish depend on the concrete beneath.

A restrained, contemporary finish
Concrete provides a neutral base for timber, metal, textiles and colour. Aggregate exposure, sheen, colour variation and existing marks all influence the finished character. Samples and realistic expectations matter because an existing slab will not necessarily become perfectly uniform.
Designed for demanding use
A correctly specified system can perform well under busy foot traffic. Performance still depends on slab quality, joints, cracks, contaminants, preparation and the intended environment. Polishing does not repair structural movement or make every slab moisture-proof.
Maintenance is simple, not maintenance-free
Regular dust removal reduces abrasive grit. Damp cleaning should use products and pads compatible with the installed system. Spills need prompt attention, while periodic professional maintenance may be needed to retain appearance in busy spaces.
Finish choices
- Aggregate exposure: from a light salt-and-pepper appearance to deeper grinding that reveals larger stone.
- Sheen: matte, satin and higher-gloss outcomes require different processing.
- Colour: dyes or stains may be possible, subject to the slab and system.
- Joints and cracks: these remain part of the floor and should be discussed as design details.
Comfort, acoustics and safety
Concrete is hard underfoot and can reflect sound, so rugs, acoustic finishes and furniture can make occupied rooms more comfortable. Slip performance changes with texture, contamination and cleaning. Wet or specialised areas need a project-specific specification rather than an assumption based on gloss alone.
